About the artist

I am S.Ranseen (They/Them).  I started my journey as an artist in college when I took scientific illustration and life drawing classes to help me improve my lab notes for my biological and zoological classes. I had previously worked in oil and acrylic paint primarily but after those classes I fell in love with pencils, pens, markers, and paper.

My primary art styles are scientific illustration and art nouveau/deco though I take a large amount of inspiration from the the Japanese master print makers, medieval manuscripts, Renaissance woodblock prints, and the impressionist. I draw everything from the fantastical to the real world. My primary medium is pencil, pen, and paper but I dabble in etching, woodblock, photography, painting in several mediums, and leather work. I have not expanded to digital work, so for now am a traditional artist.

I teach, I do commissions, I write, and I try to stay busy.  In my non-art life, I am an ecologist and GIS specialist.

Please feel free to contact me I am open for lessons and custom work.
